Why they chose not to include illustrations on a book about visual art I have no idea but it was a poor decision, making this book very much less useful than it might otherwise have been. avoid this book; the quality of print is low grade, and that of illustrations are terrible
This book is a good referance to find our roots in photographic composition. It will give the reader some history in the origen of photography. This book highlight the age old question. Can photography also be classified as art?
I recommend this book for all new photographers in finding your ancestral photographic roots, if we can call it that way.
In my plus 40 years as photographer I can say that most of the recommendations are still valid up to this day or in other words, we now know how we got to it!
Something that I personally enjoy is the fact that this book force us to think and use our imagination whenever a concept is described. Lateral thinking and visualisation is our survival tool in photography, not other peoples pictures, admittendly, that is mostly helpfull for beginners!
This book should be read with the understanding that it was first published in 1903 and not 2013.
Also very important will be the following Comments from one of the other reviews on the quality of printing or presentation does not reflect my experiance. My copy is perfectly printed & edited with interactive scroll bar plus content ledgers containing chapters, pages, etc. Thus High Quality!
The first edition as well as the older editions have much better image quality. The words and images in the reprint (new editions) are difficult to read/see due to the reprinting process.
The information, nevertheless, is extremely valuable for artists engaging in pictorial composition. Truly one of the best books on composition, and an important reference on your bookshelf.
This is a well written book....but there are no illustrations in the edition! I have just ordered the paperback because the points the author puts forth make sense with the art work. I suggest that remove this offering because all it ultimately does is disappoint. Buy the book....you will not be disappointed with that!
Surprisingly, this is a book on pictorial composition that completely omits inclusion of any examples of the works he analyses. Unless you happen to have copies of the works he covers on hand, you will find this of very little use.
